More Skills Train / Scheidegger Internet Research to help you decide if you should sign up for their courses

Disclaimer: Here are the results of more searching I have done on the web for the Skills Train Courses before you make up your mind about signing up with them I think it is important that you are able to see both the positive and negative reviews about the company as it seems alot of the negative reports appear to have been censored from search engines or removed from sites. This site does not contain my opinion of the Skills Train or Scheidegger only my findings from various sites on the internet.

1. It turns out that the BBC have received several complaints about the company and sent an Inside Out reporter to arrange an interview the reporter was told that the company had close links with Manpower and Elan IT one in the same company who have have since told the BBC they used to have a relationship with skills train but have since severed ties with them and told them not to continue using their name when conducting interviews with clients. The rest of the report states that the course advisor’s conduct was unacceptable and when the BBC requested a statement from Skills train they passed blame to one of their other company names Multimedia Computer Training Ltd. who feature on their business cards and then Multimedia Computer Training Ltd when asked to comment blamed the interview solely on the advisor in question. You can read the full article here. At the bottom of the page the article starts with the title Scheidegger.

2. I found yet another forum article on a forum from a Nigerian gentleman who had moved to UK with very little computer skills other than knowing how to browse the web he responded to an ad from skills train to try and gain some more skills looking for employment in their UK. Once again the guy was visited by a sales rep, talked into signing the loan agreement for £70 a month over 36 months (the standard 3 year contract they seem to offer.) Once he had signed up he found it difficult to understand how the online training was to be completed and when attempting to cancel the course found that he was now locked in for the full 3 year period. There are numerous complaints posted as replies to this post with various stories ranging from difficulties in cancelling even when the customer had cancelled within the agreed time period “i insisted that i sent it on time and even put photocopies of all the letters i’ve been sending them. they kept insisting i didn’t send it on time, they even sent a letter threatening court action” This particular post stems from a course on Cisco’s training this time and so it seems that the complaints for this company are not limited to the CIW course I was looking into. here’s a few more quotes from that particular forum:

“I hate scheidegger/Skills Train, i have been scammed out of £3600. I sometimes think how stupid i was for signing up for this course when i was 17. I am now 18 and regret doing this course, the tutors on the phone are not helpful and just read out of the same folder as they send me, they seem to be hurried to get me off the phone, giving a negative impression making me not want to phone back for further help/assistance.” – Scorpian5

“Skill train promise you a course for an upfront fee (enrolment fee) try to make you piratically beg for the course first. The rep then states that you make payments monthly for the course. What you actually sign is a contract for a LOAN. Once you sign the contract for the loan you have committed to paying back this loan money regardless of the course. A flashy pack is put together, the information that you get through your course is not up-to-date, or accurate, and you wouldn’t know any different (why would you take a course about something you’ve already learnt about?) but you are legally binded to pay money back for the loan(course) as this is a clause in the contract.” – Missyflea

The full forum post can be found here.

3. It appears that the company Skills Train / Scheidegger have tried to censor google results to omit negative comments about their courses a copy of a letter which was sent to google UK can be found here.

4. Various Reviews of the Scheidegger Company aka Skills Train can be found here there are some positive along with alot of negatives with an overall rating of 2.5/5.

5. Several more reviews mainly negative about the Scheidegger Company Dating back to 2001. It seems little has changed over the last 6 years for the company except their name to Skills Train :) .

Well that’s more food for thought for the time being and don’t forget to view my original article on Skills Train / Scheidegger before deciding to sign up for their courses

If anyone has anything either positive or negative to say about the course offered by Skills Train please let me know.

Should I Take a Scheidegger / Skills Train / Multimedia Computer Training Ltd. / IT Skills Course

If you are thinking of taking one of the above courses Scheidegger, Skills Train, Multimedia Computer Training Ltd., or IT Skills course you should really consider reading this before making your decision to sign up. This is not a review more of a warning as I have not actually taken the course yet but from careful searching on the internet here is what I have found out:

I have recently decided that it is time to look at gaining some IT qualifications. My recent job hasn’t worked out and I have recently resigned in the hopes of finding something better , when considering what I want to do with the rest of my life web design seemed to be something which I really fancied and so I put some thought into what sort of qualifications I could get. My girlfriend had given a company named Skills Train a call and arranged for them to call me back knowing my intentions and having heard about them. The rep from Skills Train called me about 4 days ago and asked me about my current IT Skills the conversation went something like this:

Rep: “So what IT skills do you currently Have?

Me: “erm none, I know my way around a PC I know a little about building websites and I have no qualifications”

Rep: “That’s fine, but you know how to use the internet and a Microsoft word right?”

Me: “yeah?”

Rep: “ok well I tell you what I’ll arrange for a representative to come around and have a chat with you and see if you what courses of ours would suit you”

I arranged to see a Rep a few days later which happens to be earlier today. The guy came round and was very professional with what seemed to be a nice laptop bag dressed in a suit and I thought yeah this guy might be the real deal lets see what he’s got to offer me. After a casual chat about my current employment and future hopes for work we turned ton the conversation of what the Skills Train had to offer. The CIW Certified Internet Webmaster a Course in web design was recommended by the Rep as the course for me. When I asked about the price I was told £3000 but there was a way that I could apply to have a grant from the government which would allow me to make payments at 0% interest of about £18 a month (I have recently discovered there was no such grant just a LOAN from the company themselves which may or may not be interest free I cannot yet confirm). If you remember I mentioned that I am currently working my notice at my current job and so the rep told me the best thing to do was to wait until I got into another job then contact him to get signed up on the course. After about 30 minutes of conversation about the wealth of fantastic web design jobs my rep had done previously in his 15 years experience in web design earning several large salaries over various positions and about the many job opportunities at the end of the course with a lot of attractive wages mentioned the Rep left leaving a business card and promising to send details by email and confirming again that I would call him once I secured a new job.

Then Came The Google Research on the Company Skills Train and various other names which they trade under.

From what I can gather the CIW Qualification is accredited by a company named Scheidegger and is sold currently through a company named Skills Train who sub contract their sale of the course through the name Multimedia Computer Training Ltd.

The Qualification and CIW course from what I have found appears to be a complete waste of time and not recognised by any reputable company or at least I am yet to find an employer who will accept this as any formal qualification and the companies which provide the course don’t seem to be able to provide a link to any companies either. Starting to have second thoughts? I was too.

Now Time for the things which don’t quite add up

  1. The Skill Train Website is not exactly the most professional looking website and looks much like a cheap template you can probably get for free from resources on the web or perhaps purchase for a couple of pounds definitely not what you would expect from a company you are planning to buy a course from.
  2. The Rep said he had been in several highly paid web design positions listing rather large wages and some fantastic descriptions of ideal jobs as well as the fact that he had been earning over £75,000 per ear at one point when self employed. So why was he now driving around on a Saturday afternoon with a laminated piece of card selling what seems to be looking more and more like a scam web design qualification?
  3. There seems to be very little to be said in favour of the companies which sell this course and the ones which do appear to defend the course or promote it often seem to stem from either the representatives themselves or people who have been very fortunate to find a job with these bogus qualifications, one example of this is ciwcourse.com which seems to be one of the most positive review but which is still full of criticism about various aspects of the course in question, the materials, and the tutors.
  4. There are a wealth of complaints and customers who are dissatisfied about the course CIW web design the people who oversee the qualification Scheidegger and the companies which sell the course Skills Train and Multimedia Computer Training Ltd. The site which seems to host most of the complaints and stories of bad experiences of the course and companies is a sub forum of a site called digital trends the forum features hundreds of dissatisfied customers who have written thousands of posts, and there’s even a few defensive comments from course tutors and sales representatives which never really seem to have any hard proof of anyone being successful after taking the course other than a few quotes from ‘satisfied customers’ and they fail to ever provide a list of any companies which recognise the qualifications offered by them

I seriously suggest that anyone considering the courses offered by the Skills Train, or Multimedia Computer Training Ltd. especially the CIW Web Design Qualification give serious thought and put a lot of research into making their decision before signing up and handing over any money as their customer service once you have signed on the dotted line is supposed to be anything but helpful.

Some of the facts about the Skills Train according to site I have visited are:

  1. The company will not let you cancel your course after a certain amount of time. I am not clear on exactly how long as they appear to be various stories of 5,14,28 and 31 day cancellation periods being quoted.
  2. The CIW is not a recognised qualification.
  3. The Courses are very basic in most parts and the course material is very poor
  4. The support CD’s are useless
  5. The appears to be no employers willing to support the qualification CIW or which will associate with the Skills Train.

From this I have decided not to part with any of my cash for the moment and do a bit more digging into both the qualifications and the companies and I would be very cautious as this appears to be a money making scam which encourages you to take out a loan to pay for a qualification that is not worth the paper it is printed on

Be Warned!

Last.fm Downloader – Save Last FM Tracks with this free program

The Last Stripper is an awesome little program for obtaining some great free MP3 songs. For anyone familiar with Last.fm the Music based Social Networking site you’ll absolutely love this program simply download and install then input your details for Last.fm once logged in you can set a tag to stream music which is tagged the stream is then automatically recorded into a folder of your choice. Not only that but the program adds ID3 tags putting the downloaded .mp3 files in folders by name of artist and then a sub folder for the album plus you get the album art as well.

This is an awesome hack for the last.fm site and a great way of finding new music to listen to. Of course I don’t condone downloading illegal music so if you find a song or artist you like buy their album otherwise delete the song ;)

A definite download for any last.fm user and anyone who doesn’t should also take a look and consider signing up to last.fm for free mp3 downloads :)

Thanks to Life Hacker for the story.

Finally Flickr images in a popular search engine…

I don’t know about you but even though most of the results suck and the pictures are normally the smallest worst quality pictures I still turn to search engine image searches for my needs. Now I’ll admit my first choice is normally google image search but since I have recently found out Yahoo are now including Flickr Images in their search results not only that but as soon as they are uploaded they will be available to search.

So what does this mean?

  1. more than 300 million flickr Pictures will now be added to their search engine.
  2. Pictures which are tagged on flickr will be indexed by the search engine so your pictures if correctly tagged will be topping the results on the yahoo search pages.
  3. With the results you’ll also find a link to the photographers profile.

This seems like really good news both for photographers gaining exposure, and for the quality of images search’s which currently are not worth the time it takes to find them. My only concern really is that the tagging system now on flickr might be open to spamming simply for inclusion in the yahoo image search results, I guess only time will tell…

Try the yahoo search with the new flickr inclusions here

Thoughts on the new Windows Live Messenger and Messenger Plus Live

So I have downloaded the new Windows Live Messenger guess what no real big surprises from Microsoft with this new release of their previously know msn messenger what has impressed me though are all the cool new features on messenger plus live.

I’ve always been a huge fan of add-ons a plug ins for my favourite applications and since msn is my instant messenger of choice its only natural that I have been using messenger plus for a few years now. This specific plus is a gateway to loads of extra options and tools for Windows messenger and their latest release with customisable scripts has pretty much encouraged me to start using msn again after months of hardly going online.

I’ll kick off with one of my favourite scripts for the new messenger plus Music Now Playing 1.3.0 which not only allows you to advertise the songs your listening to after your name on on your friends contact list but it has a bunch of other cool features my personal favourite being a command that once typed by any of your contacts, whether they have the plug-in or not , automatically allows them to download the song your listening to a file transfer over msn. So if your ever on msn and see a song I’m listening to just type !sendsong to start a file transfer grabbing whatever is currently playing on my media player.

Answering Machine Plus is the next script I’d like to mention. I’m personally not unfamiliar with auto responders and bots which can speak for you on msn but this particular add on for the Windows Live messenger seems really easy to use and configure yet it also has tones of features so you can set up everything from simple messages as replies to you basic ‘hello’ ‘how are you’ messages you get to whole conversations if you have the time or patience. For now I have just added a couple of words which might spark an automatic response from me.

Stat Centre 1.1.2 is the third and final script I’m going to mention today and this nifty little script gives you a wealth of information on both your own msn stats and those of your contacts from how many times they have been in each status, online? offline? Away? Busy? etc and how many conversations you have had with this to previous personal message and display name changes. a must have for all of you interested in formation gathered while your on Windows Messenger

On top of all of these funky new scripts you have all the basic features I have come to love about messenger plus: Chat Logging, Word Replacement, Hot Keys, Irc style short cuts, display customisation, editable contacts sounds, and of course the nice and tidy Tabbed chats.

So if you haven’t already make sure you visit some of the links below and make the most out of your favourite Instant Messenger.

Bunny Watch Question!! If i pick up the bunnies will the mom eat them or is it safe to pick them up?

If i pick up the bunnies will the mom eat them or is it safe to pick them up?

In response to Lindsays question on the post Baby Rabbits First Feed From Thier Mother

Hi Lindsey

Congratulations on the bunnies!

Due to the way in which we found our bunnies we didn’t really have the chance to think about this, we had to hold them because there mother wasn’t around. If the mother is with the bunnies (and from what I’ve read she does not pay ‘too’ much attention to them because this would draw attention to them in the wild.) But if she is near them and looks like as though she might be mothering them, like having made a fluffy nest for them I think I’d be tempted to say that although you might reeeally want to hold them, I wouldn’t do so yet.

I’ve read on websites, and I emailed the House Rabbit Society the same question you asked when I wanted to re-unite the babies with their mother, they say that its ok and the scent of humans on the bunnies shouldn’t make too much of a difference – but our rabbit trampled on the bunnies and bit one of them when we put them back together – this may have been nothing to do with the transfer of human scent but you never know.

Keep an eye on them, and I’d say after a week or two, perhaps start with lil stokes while they’re still in their nest, making sure to stroke mom bunny first so she knows you’re friendly and not going to harm them.

I hope your mom rabbit takes care of the bunnies, this is the healthiest and best start they can have. The mother’s milk is perfectly formed to help their immune system and growth – you wont need to bother with all the expensive mixtures and supplements that we had to! But I’m glad to say that we’ve still got three beautiful strong bunny boys, that are as cute and fluffy as ever.

Good luck, and thanks for your question – sorry it’s a bit drawn out! Feel free to email me again if you have any other questions or anything.

Sara (‘mother’ of the rabbits on Bens Camera T Blog)

We will try and answer anmore questions that we can so feel free to post if you have something to ask about raising new born bunnies
