Bunny’s hit the hay!
Today has been quite an odd day for the bunnies, After a really good feed last yesterday afternoon I wasn’t surprised to find that the rabbits weren’t very hungry at 2am when I tried again to give them some milk between them they managed about 10ml and I let them settle down to go to sleep. When I first fed them this morning I expect that they would be quite hungry and have a lot of milk to I prepared about 30ml of milk for them only to find that there was just under 20ml left after they were all done with the bottle. This was quite odd I though 2 feedings of about 10ml when they had been having almost that each the past few days. Anyways I have proceeded to keep trying them with milk every couple of hours and every now and again one of them will really take to the teat and get its fill.
When I just went to feed them about half an hour ago I noticed that Bunny F was nibbling on the hay in the nest, we thought we had seen him doing this before but it was only very small amounts before which we simply dismissed but now it was quite clear he was eating some of the hay. This must be a good sign, I’ve read that they don’t usually wean onto solid food until well into the third week and we are just approaching that stage now. Perhaps the bunnies are catching up with their natural growth rate and beginning to develop as normal, at any rate I’m seeing this as a good sign. Once I had given each of the babies a go with the bottle (again they did not take very much) I again heard the sound of one of the little rabbits chewing on hay, only this time when i went closer i found that all of them were having a little nibble. It might seem like small progress to some but I’m hopeful that this means they are going to have a good go at the weaning process.
The KMR has arrived this afternoon, I haven’t yet tested It with the babies we plan to do this later this evening and I’ll post again later to let you know how that goes, if anyone is interested we got the KMR milk from MPM Products Limited (www.mpmproducts.co.uk) a UK supplier of the Kitten Milk Rplacer.
Another little thing. It may have just been a freak co-incidence but I saw one of the little baby bunnies go to the toilet outside the nest before scampering back inside again. again only a minor detail but I was quite impressed they were potty trained already
. I’m pleased to announce that all the babies despite not feeding very much from the bottle today are very active and have been exploring the cage an awful lot, looking over the edge and at their surroundings.
