Bunny Watch The Latest News!

Time for an update, and I’m sure you’ll all be glad to hear that the baby rabbits are coming along great. as you could probably see by the pictures I took and posted yesterday the bunnies have grown quite a lot in the 8 days we have had them and they have all now go used to opening their eye’s and are becoming very active and strong. We have continued to feed them on baby milk, however we have switch to cow and gate brand now, since it claims to be closer to mother milk than the rest (this could be completely wrong and might make no difference but the babies seem to enjoy it). They are now taking upto 6/7 ml a feed now which is a huge improvement since the first week and they are seeming to be progressing quite normally according to most websites which say they should be drinking about 22-27ml a day by week 2-3.

We did have 1 major break through with the feeding however. We heard from a friend of a friend who knew a vet that there was some special milk out there which was designed for baby rabbits and which was very close to a mother rabbits milk, the name of the milk is KMR (although it is meant for kittens is is suitable for baby rabbits ) and despite our search to several large petshops to find It we have currently been unsuccessful in acquiring some. We did however manage to find a Lactol Feeding Set which contains a small bottle with a screw on teat (exactly what we had been looking for) the set comes with 3 spare teats and is perfect for the bunnies in size and after cutting off the end of the rubber teat the baby rabbits have really started feeding much much better. I think the pipette was ok for the first couple of days but it relied upon us dropping the milk into their mouths where as with the teat they can suck the milk at their own pace, I would recommend this set to anyone trying to raise orphan bunny rabbits.

The new bottle and teat has really speeded up feeding time and coupled with their growth has had a noticeable effect of the rabbits, they seem to love it and are really relaxing more when feeding but at the same time taking in much more at their own pace. We have made another nest right next to the original nest after finding that their old nest was a little damp from their urine. and I got some more of mother fur to line the new nest and we have made it so that they can (if they wish) get between the 2. We would hope that they would use the old nest as a toilet but I think its hoping a bit much at this stage but who knows…

The bunnies are coming along fantastically and we have managed to find some of that bunny replacement milk by KMR on a UK based online pet store and are planning on purchasing some for delivery next week. Will keep you posted with any more developments and any more pictures if the opportunity arises.
